The mighty Rhine meanders between hillside, castles and steep terraced vineyards - around every bend an idyllic village with its half-timbered houses and Gothic church steeples. This lovely tour is based in the heart of the popular resort of Rüdesheim, right on the banks of the Rhine. Its pretty houses, cosy wine cellars and cobbled streets lend it an undeniable charm. Here you can visit the 16th century Drosselgasse, which is packed with wine bars and traditional German music and view this land of legend, cosy riverside villages and hilltop castles from the riverbanks.

Itinerary

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - After joining your holiday coach heading to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. Continuing via the auto-routes of France, Belgium and Germany to arrive late in Rüdesheim for your 4 night stay. Late night snack on arrival. DBB

Day 2 - 4 At leisure in Rüdesheim with one included excursion, one optional excursion and a full day at leisure with a ride on the Winzer Express Land Train

From your centrally located hotel, you can easily explore the town on your free day. Just a 10-minute walk to Siegfried's Mechanical Museum to join the 'Winzer Express', the land train which will take you on a 30-minute journey with English commentary through the narrow lanes and alleys of Rüdesheim old town as well as through the vineyards. Spend the remainder of the day at leisure to explore compact Rüdesheim at your own place.

See the world-famous Drosselgasse with its cosy traditional wine taverns and historic half-timbered houses, take a riverside stroll, sample the local cuisine and meet the locals.  Vinothek RheinWeinWelt is housed in the former Asbach Brandy distillery, near the railway station. Here you can sample many different wines from local wine growers in the cellars (some steps). You simply purchase tokens and then gently stroll with your tasting glass and select the wines you wish to sample

Loreley Rhine Cruise
Enjoy a day out to discover some of the highlights of this magical region. From Rüdesheim join a Rhine River cruise which takes you along the UNESCO World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley, the most dramatic part of the river as it cuts deeply through the hills. Pass by fairytale castles, steep forested hillsides and romantic riverside villages. From the deck enjoy views of the legendary Loreley where boatsmen were said to have been lured to their death by her haunting song and enchanting beauty. Disembark in Sankt Goar for some free time before meeting your coach to drive to picturesque little Bacharach, overlooked by the12th century fortified castle of Stahleck and the ancient ruins of the Gothic Werner chapel. Return to Rüdesheim via the Bingen ferry across the river.

OPTIONAL EXCURSION
Romantic Heidelberg 
Heidelberg attracts visitors from all over the world and with its fabulous baroque old town, beautiful riverside setting, red sandstone buildings and rich literary heritage, it is easy to see why.  Nestled between the Neckar River and the foothills of the Odenwald forest, Heidelberg is a city worth falling in love with. The dreamy, romantic setting around the Old Bridge and the castle is stunning. In the centre of the Old Town is the Marktplatz square, which boasts one of Heidelberg's many beautiful fountains, grand period houses, cafés and pretty little shops. The university is the oldest in Germany and you can still see what makes the city so unique in the many cosy old student bars. Your driver may be able to offer you an optional guided walking tour to explore the many different faces of Heidelberg. The world-famous 'half-ruined' castle is the epitome of German Romanticism (entrance not included - in 2024 approx. €9 pp plus an additional €6 pp for a guided tour including use of the funicular railway).

Day 5 - Early start today with a packed breakfast as you travel back through Germany, Belgium and France to Calais for the return to England.

Altdeutsche Weinstube Hotel, Rüdesheim

Located in the heart of Rüdesheim, you can expect a warm and friendly atmosphere at this charming, 3* hotel which has been family-run with passion for 5 generations. The Altdeutsche Weinstube (meaning the old German wine tavern) has a long tradition of hospitality dating from1882 to the present day. Guestrooms are sympathetically decorated and offer WiFi, TV and hairdryer. NB Walk-in showers are available on request in superior rooms which incur a supplement. There is a pretty courtyard as well as the main wine bar / restaurant which stocks a range of regional wines. There are two lifts and some internal steps. Porterage is not available. Back to top
