Rye & Hastings
Rye is an archetypal medieval town, entered through a powerful stone gateway. The narrow streets, many of them cobbled, rise to a fine old church. Many of the houses on Mermaid Street have interconnecting attics through which smugglers could avoid the excise men. Rye is a delight with its selection of independent boutique shops selling antiques, curios and unique items of furniture. Hastings has undergone extensive regeneration in recent years, the centrepiece of which is the new £15m pier. Attractions include the Shipwreck Museum, Castle and Jerwood Gallery. The Old Town features an array of delightful independent shops and a cliff railway. Hastings also has a miniature steam railway (seasonal variations to opening) which has been open since 1948!
Michelham Priory House & Gardens
Set on its very own island on the Cuckmere Valley, Michelham is an an ancient house formed from an Augustine Priory founded in 1229. It boasts England's longest medieval water filled moat as well as 7 acres of stunning grounds including kitchen, physic and medieval herb gardens dotted about with beautiful modern sculptures. Visit the historic watermill, forge and interactive medieval gallery in the 14th century gatehouse. Enjoy a guided tour of the house (no lift access to upper floor) before exploring the gardens. The grounds are mostly level with some gravel paths.
