4 days

Affectionately known as the ‘Fifth Season’’ by the locals, the much-loved exuberant tradition of Carnival (Karneval in German) sees an annual myriad of events, parades and celebrations all along the Rhine. The atmosphere is electric as the days before Lent see the streets and cafés brim with folk in colourful Carnival costumes, singing, having fun and living it up. On the Sunday before ‘Rose Monday’, Boppard plays host to a wonderful evening procession, full of conviviality, extravagant outfits and lively music as sweets and other goodies are thrown out to the waiting crowds lining the streets. Come and experience Germany at Carnival time and see the Germans in a completely new light at one of the greatest parties of the Rhineland calendar!

Plan My Trip

Day 1 - After joining your holiday coach, travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. Then continue to the Rhine for a late evening arrival at the centrally located Hotel Rheinlust in Boppard with a welcome drink on arrival. Light supper, bed & breakfast.

Day 2Koblenz & Bad Salzig

Just a short drive this morning brings you to the fine city of Koblenz, home to the epic ‘Deutsches Eck’ (German Corner!) where the Rhine and Moselle Rivers converge. Known as the Northern Gateway to the Romantic Rhine, Koblenz plays an important role at this time of year and together with a local English-speaking guide you will discover some of the fascinating history and traditions of Karneval. This afternoon head to the little Rhineland spa town of Bad Salzig to experience German traditions first-hand at the Carnival procession which starts every year at precisely 14.11.

Day 3Rüdesheim, Rhine Cruise & Boppard Procession

Drive along the Rhine via Bingen with a short ferry crossing to pretty Rüdesheim with its cobbled streets and quaint, half-timbered houses. Take a stroll along the famous Drosselgasse, the bustling medieval alley full of inviting cafes and wine bars. Perhaps you might like to try Germany’s answer to Irish coffee, a delicious ‘Rüdesheimer Kaffee’ in a local café? No visit to the region would be complete without a boat trip on the Rhine and this afternoon you can enjoy an included panoramic cruise from Sankt Goar back to Boppard with views of the famous Loreley Rock. The scenery is simply spectacular and it is certainly the very best (and most relaxing) way to enjoy the river. There will be an early dinner in the hotel in time for you to take position for this evening’s colourful parade through the streets of Boppard. Expect floats, festivities and frivolity galore! The procession starts at 18.11 and goes directly passed the hotel so you can enjoy the action from inside or wrap up warm and step outside to soak up the atmosphere ‘live’.

Day 4 - Early start today to travel back through France to Calais for the return to England.
