2021 Magical Moselle
The Moselle Valley is a land of picturesque riverside towns and villages, fairytale castles, vineyards clinging to steep hillsides and delightful half-timbered historic houses. Flowing between the two massifs of the Eifel and the Hunsrück, the Moselle is greener, narrower and less bustling than its famous partner, the Rhine, and is the perfect place to just relax and watch the pageant of passing boats unfold. The wine making village of Lösnich is the perfect location to tour this beautiful region and the friendly Hotel Heil makes a great base for a memorable stay…complete with wine tasting, of course!
PLEASE NOTE: Price is per person and based on two people sharing a twin/double room. Single room supplements and upgrades are not included.
DAY 1 - Travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais, then continue to Germany via the auto-routes of France and Belgium and onto Lösnich for an evening arrival where a welcome glass of wine awaits. Dinner, bed & breakfast
DAY 2 - 4 - At leisure in Lösnich, with two included excursions, a dance night with live musical entertainment one evening as well as a wine tasting in the hotel. Head north today to ancient Cochem with its many medieval squares, beautifully restored houses and dramatic castle, Schloss Reichsburg, perched precipitously on a rock. Cochem offers a large number of wine shops as you might expect in this region and the owners are often keen to offer tasting opportunities. There is also an abundance of restaurants and cafes with open air terraces from which to enjoy the view. Cochem has its own chair lift up to the 'Pinner Kreuz', one of the most panoramic viewpoints over the region (approx €7 pp return in 2020). Additionally your driver may be able to offer you an optional river cruise on the Moselle to round off your day perfectly.
CRUISING THE MOSELLE
Drive the short distance to the riverside village of Traben Trarbach to join your morning Moselle cruise. There is no better way to enjoy the magnificent views of the stunning viticultural landscape than from the Moselle itself on a panoramic river cruise. The 2-hour cruise takes back along the river, passed Lösnich and through the Moselle lock at Zeltingen before you disembark in the atmospheric 700 year old town of Bernkastel-Kues. Its medieval old town is full of romantic narrow streets and picturesque nooks and crannies. There will be time at leisure to explore. Look out for the pointed house, a much photographed narrow little gabled building dating back to 1416. Or perhaps visit the Moselle Wine Museum to learn more about Germany's oldest winegrowing region (entrance not included). Your coach will be waiting to take you back to the hotel this afternoon.
Founded as Augusta Treverorum in 15 BC, Trier grew to become capital of the Western Roman Empire by the third century AD and is now home to northern Europe's finest ensemble of Roman monuments including the magnificent UNESCO protected Porta Nigra gate, elaborate thermal baths and amphitheatre. Also known for being the birthplace of Karl Marx, atmospheric Trier sits right on the Moselle, surrounded by vineyards.
DAY 5 - An early start takes you back to Calais and the return ferry crossing to Dover, arriving home during the evening.Back to top
