Europe
  • Duration: 5 days
  • Board Basis: Half Board
  • Tour Ref: D2TCRU8443

Holiday Summary

  • Travel Type: Coach

5 days

Christmas in Germany is sheer magic! As the festive frenzy of the weeks before Christmas die down, authentic traditions and Yuletide merriment take over as Germany starts its celebrations late on Christmas Eve - loved ones get together, gifts are exchanged and good food and drink are enjoyed. Now you can experience an enchanting German Christmas, where you kick back, relax and enjoy a festive, fun-packed few days. This is Christmas German-style, so don't expect roast turkey and the Queen's speech. What you can expect is a very warm welcome, plenty of party time sparkle, great excursions, top-notch festive fare, two evenings' free bar and the odd Glühwein (of course!). Frohe Weihnachten!

Itinerary

Itinerary

DAY 1 - From your chosen joining point your feeder vehicle will take you to the designated interchange point where your holiday begins. After joining your holiday coach, you travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais, then continue to Germany via the auto-routes of France and Belgium and onto Remagen. It will be a late arrival at the hotel this evening where a light supper awaits. Supper, bed & breakfast

DAY 2 - Christmas Eve
Take a ride along the pretty Ahr Valley from Remagen station (directly opposite the hotel) through the steep wine terraces by local train. Arrival in Mayschoß, home to the vineyards of the oldest wine growers' co-operative in the world, followed by a visit to the wine cellars, a tasting of three wines (including the excellent Pinot Noir red wine) and a light lunch of local cold cuts and cheese. Continue your Ahr odyssey to the lovely medieval walled city of Ahrweiler for some free time to explore. NB Shops close at lunchtime on Christmas Eve. Head back to Remagen in time to attend a church service for anyone who wishes. There is a Catholic and Lutheran church within walking distance of the hotel. Service times will be confirmed but they are usually late afternoon as well as late evening. Tonight's dinner in the hotel is a very special and atmospheric candlelit 5-course menu with a free bar operating between 18.30 - 21.00 (local beer, wine, soft drinks - restrictions apply)

DAY 3 - Christmas Day
Spend Christmas morning getting to know charming Remagen and its epic history with a guided walk through the town. Warm up en-route with a mug of Glühwein. Then it is back to the hotel for a light Christmas Day lunch - set menu. This afternoon you may like to take a stroll along the Rhine promenade to see the surviving basalt towers of the famous bridge which played such a pivotal role in WWII. Alternatively you may like to hop on a local train to Cologne (approx. 45mins) or Bonn (approx. 15mins) - ask at the hotel for train times. Don your finery and dancing shoes this evening for Christmas Party night with live entertainment, a delicious buffet, free bar (as per 24th) and a visit from a very special guest bearing gifts.

DAY 4 - Boxing Day
A bit of a lie-in this morning, before boarding the coach to drive to picturesque Boppard to join an included 2½ hour panoramic circular cruise on the mighty Rhine to the famous Loreley Rock and back. The scenery is simply spectacular (even in winter!) and this is certainly the very best (and most relaxing) way to enjoy the river. Back to the hotel this afternoon with time to relax before your last dinner in Remagen. After dinner enjoy a Feuerzangenbowle - a traditional German speciality, it is a mulled wine punch with rum prepared on an open fire! Prost!

DAY 5 - An early start takes you back to Calais and the return ferry crossing to Dover, arriving home during the evening.
