Whitby & North York Moors National Park
Your included excursion takes you across the dramatic North York Moors National Park to Robin Hood's Bay (steep walk to the village centre). Then call at the fishing town of Whitby, dominated by its cliff-top Abbey, with its quaint cobbled streets and picturesque houses standing on the steep slopes of the River Esk. The narrow streets and alleys winding down to the quays of this seafaring town still bustle as they have done for centuries. For the energetic, climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey and explore the beautiful ruins which tower over the town.
Helmsley & Ampleforth Abbey
Start the day in picture postcard Helmsley, an attractive market town within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. (Market day is Friday - 7 days tour only). The town's impressive 900 year old castle (now ruins), surrounded by spectacular banks and ditches, has evolved from a mighty medieval fortress to a luxurious Tudor mansion, to a Civil War stronghold and a romantic Victorian ruin. (English Heritage - entrance not included £8.70 in 2020). The Helmsley Walled Garden sits beneath the ruins (entrance not included approx. £7.50 pp in 2020). Continue this afternoon to Ampleforth Abbey, set in 2000 acres in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Enjoy tea and cake as well as guided tour of the Orchard & Cider Mill. For more than 200 years Ampleforth Abbey has been growing apples. Today, with more than 2,500 trees growing over 10 acres, the Ampleforth Abbey Orchard is one of the largest commercial orchards in the North of England where full juice cider is crafted, pressed, fermented and matured. The Abbey Visitor Centre tells the day-to-day life of the monastic community and the vows they take as well as the history of Ampleforth Abbey and College.
