2019 - Italian Lakeland 3*
Orta, Maggiore & Como
Perhaps the most romantic of the Italian lakes, tranquil Lake Orta, surrounded by dense dark-green woodlands, is separated from its bigger, busier and more well-known neighbour, Lake Maggiore, by Monte Mattarone. The quiet beauty of the landscape and its captivating medieval village ‘capital’, Orta San Giulio, make this a wonderful retreat where you can take a step back and relax.
This tour spends time around the idyllic Lake Maggiore where magnificent mountains plunge to the lake shore and where elegant villas lie tucked away behind palm trees and lush gardens. Here you will find picture postcard villages with cobbled streets and delightful churches which spill off the flower lined promenades overlooking the clear blue waters of Lake Maggiore. Add in day on Lake Como and you have the perfect Italian Lakeland Trio!

Medieval Orta San Giulio is just 2km away and you can explore the town itself or maybe take a water taxi to the pretty island of San Giulio. LAKE COMO FOR THE DAY

Then a scenic drive up the ‘outside leg’ takes you to the exclusive resort of Tremezzo with its opulent villas and stunning lake views. From here you may like to take the ferry as a foot passenger (fare not included) over to charming Bellagio, the Pearl of Lake Como, beautifully situated on the headland where the lake divides in two. Alternatively you could visit the wonderful botanical gardens at Villa Carlotta (entrance not included) a short walk from Tremezzo.
Enjoy a leisurely visit to elegant Stresa, the charming tourist resort in a picturesque location on the shores of Lake Maggiore with captivating views across to the Borromean Islands. Meander along the lakefront promenade and admire the beautifully kept public gardens, monuments and statues and watch the comings and goings of boats across the lake. Or perhaps dive into the jumble of cobbled streets in the old centre or enjoy an espresso in the shade of Piazza Cadorna. Your tour manager may be able to offer you an optional trip to the Borromean Islands visiting Isola Bella and/or Isola Pescatori where the gardens are bursting with flora and fauna.
