Orta, Maggiore & Como

Perhaps the most romantic of the Italian lakes, tranquil Lake Orta, surrounded by dense dark-green woodlands, is separated from its bigger, busier and more well-known neighbour, Lake Maggiore, by Monte Mattarone. The quiet beauty of the landscape and its captivating medieval village ‘capital’, Orta San Giulio, make this a wonderful retreat where you can take a step back and relax.

This tour spends time around the idyllic Lake Maggiore where magnificent mountains plunge to the lake shore and where elegant villas lie tucked away behind palm trees and lush gardens. Here you will find picture postcard villages with cobbled streets and delightful churches which spill off the flower lined promenades overlooking the clear blue waters of Lake Maggiore. Add in day on Lake Como and you have the perfect Italian Lakeland Trio!

Your Itinerary

DAY 1 – From your chosen joining point your feeder vehicle will take you to the designated interchange point where your holiday begins. After joining your holiday coach, you travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais, then continue to your overnight hotel. Bed & breakfast.

DAY 2 – Departing after breakfast, enjoy a day of ever changing scenery as the scenic drive takes you through Switzerland and the Gotthard Tunnel before crossing into Italy en-route to Lake Orta and the beautiful lakeside resort of Pettenesco to check-in to your hotel for 6 nights. Enjoy a welcome drink on arrival. Dinner, bed and breakfast.

DAY 3 – DAY 7 – At leisure on Lake Orta with three included excursions. Whilst Lake Orta may not be as well-known as its bigger counterparts, it nevertheless offers an abundance of fascination, history and beautiful landscape. The hotel enjoys an amazing location right on the lake itself and Pettenasco is a charming town with its medieval houses, small beaches and a small harbour. Medieval Orta San Giulio is just 2km away and you can explore the town itself or maybe take a water taxi to the pretty island of San Giulio. A public ferry service to Orta San Giulio stops directly at the hotel. Your tour manager may be able to offer you an optional guided tour of San Guilio and Orta. Dinner, bed & breakfast.

Travel to the southern end of Lake Como today with a stop in the lively and historic city of Como itself, set in the shadow of the Rhaetian Alps. Then a scenic drive up the ‘outside leg’ takes you to the exclusive resort of Tremezzo with its opulent villas and stunning lake views. From here you may like to take the ferry as a foot passenger (fare not included) over to charming Bellagio, the Pearl of Lake Como, beautifully situated on the headland where the lake divides in two. Alternatively you could visit the wonderful botanical gardens at Villa Carlotta (entrance not included) a short walk from Tremezzo.

Enjoy a leisurely visit to elegant Stresa, the charming tourist resort in a picturesque location on the shores of Lake Maggiore with captivating views across to the Borromean Islands. Meander along the lakefront promenade and admire the beautifully kept public gardens, monuments and statues and watch the comings and goings of boats across the lake. Or perhaps dive into the jumble of cobbled streets in the old centre or enjoy an espresso in the shade of Piazza Cadorna. Your tour manager may be able to offer you an optional trip to the Borromean Islands visiting Isola Bella and/or Isola Pescatori where the gardens are bursting with flora and fauna.

Stop this morning in Omegna at the top of Lake Orta for market day (Thursday) before heading up into the wild mountain scenery of the Anzasca Valley, once famous for its gold mines, to the pretty Alpine village of Macugnaga, located at 1327m. It is overlooked by the East Face of Monte Rosa (2600km high and 4km wide), one of the highest peaks in the Alps, and whilst the resort is best known for its winter sports, it is easily explored on foot.

DAY 8 – It’s farewell to Italy today as you leave the Italian Lakeland and retrace your steps through the heart of Alpine Switzerland to travel onto your overnight hotel. Bed & breakfast.

DAY 9 – Back to Calais and the return ferry crossing to Dover, arriving home during the evening.
