Day 1: We make our way to Yorkshire and our hotel in Harrogate, arriving in time for dinner.
Day 2: We have a busy and fascinating day ahead of us. Our first visit will take us to Ryedale Folk Museum for a unique snapshot of life on the North Yorkshire Moors. The museum brings over 4000 years of history to life through buildings and collections, including an Iron Age roundhouse, a Victorian cottage and a 1950s shop. We begin the afternoon with a guided tour of Helmsley Walled Garden with its themed garden rooms ablaze with colour and a haven for bees, butterflies and lovers of tranquillity. We then spend time at leisure enjoying a nostalgic look around Thirsk World of James Herriot, home of the famous vet and where he worked and wrote his series of books.
Day 3: We spend this morning at Newby Hall, a beautiful Georgian country house set amidst spectacular gardens. The house reveals its splendid interiors which includes some of Chippendale’s finest furniture and a rare set of Gobelins Tapestries. The award-winning gardens are a feast for the eyes with smaller gardens branching off from the famous double herbaceous borders leading down to the river. In the afternoon we enjoy a visit to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, where we can stroll along the lush streamside walk, admire the lavish herbaceous borders and relax in the sweet scented garden.
Day 4: This morning we enjoy a tour of Scampston Hall, a fine Regency country house which retains the atmosphere of a much loved family home. The Hall’s extensive grounds are captivating; with lakes, a Palladian bridge and the contemporary walled garden, designed by renowned Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf. In the afternoon we visit Castle Howard, one of England’s finest historic houses and the setting for TV production of Brideshead Revisited. More like a palace, this opulent country house is situated within idyllic sweeping parkland dotted with statues, temples, lakes and formal gardens.
Day 5: After breakfast we must begin our homeward journey.
