Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1: We arrive at our hotel, idyllically located adjacent to the seafront, in time for dinner.

Day 2: This morning we travel north into Gloucestershire for a visit to Berkeley Castle, one of the few remaining inhabited castles in England and a jewel in the crown of British history. Set in beautiful countryside, the Berkeley family have lived here since the 12th century. One of the March Castles, built to keep out the Welsh, it still has all the trappings to match with its trip steps, arrow slits, murder holes and enormous barred doors.  We will enjoy a guided tour learning about its fascinating history, taking in the inner courtyard, staterooms and galleries. There will also be free time to explore the stunning gardens, which are truly magnificent in the summer months. This afternoon we return to Weston-super-Mare for free time to relax at the hotel or enjoy the delights of town. Perhaps walk along the Grand Pier with its wonderful views and try your luck at the amusement arcades, visit the Weston museum or, if you love a bit of shopping, there’s an extensive array of independents and high street names.

Day 3: This morning, we travel to Wells, the smallest City in England, which offers numerous historical marvels such as the outstanding cathedral with its famous 14th century Astronomical Clock, The Bishop’s Palace and Vicars Close believed to be the only complete medieval street remaining in England.  The Wells and Mendip Museum is well worth a visit and brings to life the natural history and heritage of the area. There is also the award winning Somerset Farmers’ Market which is held every Wednesday morning selling delicious local produce and hand-crafted goods. This afternoon we head to Glastonbury for our guided tour of the famous Abbey, regaled with tales and stories it has held legendary status as the earliest Christian foundation in Britain, linked to Joseph of Arimathea and the burial place of King Arthur. After our visit, we enjoy the remainder of the afternoon exploring the lovely town of Glastonbury. Steeped in history, myth and legend, this quirky town is perfect for meandering through the pretty streets with its charming shops and plethora of cafes and restaurants.

Day 4: We spend today at leisure in Bath, an elegant city full of traditional heritage, contemporary culture, green spaces and the only city in the UK to be a designated World Heritage Site in its entirety. Bath’s compact visitor friendly centre is over-flowing with places to eat and drink, plus some of the finest independent shops in Britain making it a perfect day out. Built for pleasure and relaxation, beautiful Bath has been a wellbeing destination since Roman times.  Perhaps make a visit to the historic Roman Baths, Royal Crescent and Bath Abbey or immerse yourself in Bath’s remarkable collection of museums and galleries.

Day 5: This morning, after breakfast, we make our way home.
