Day 1: We make our way to Germany and our hotel in Gelsenkirchen, arriving in time to freshen up before dinner.
Day 2: After breakfast we make our way to Dortmund, a city that boasts one of the biggest Christmas markets in Germany, with over 300 stalls encircling a gigantic 45m tall Christmas tree creation reputed to be the biggest in the world. Made up of 1,700 individual trees, its 13,000 lights bathe the Christmas proceedings in a seasonal glow. Dortmund offers plenty of opportunities for shopping, offering handicrafts like seasonal wood carvings, Christmas decorations and unusual toys, as well as a multitude of stalls selling food and drink.
Day 3: Today we visit Düsseldorf and its wondrous Christmas Market, with gingerbread houses, outdoor ice rink, themed market stalls, arts & crafts huts and “Sternchenmarkt” (“Little Star Market”) – with its own illumination and crystals which break the light into thousands of colours and sparkling stars, creating a winter landscape to dream about. Düsseldorf has plenty to entertain both young and old: if you have explored all of the markets, you may wish to visit one of the city’s acclaimed art galleries and museums, or opt to ride up the 175m Rheintrum (Rhine Tower) for fantastic views over the area.
Day 4: This morning we bid goodbye to Germany and begin our journey home.
