Itinerary
Day 1: We make our way to Wales arriving at the elegant Metropole Hotel and Spa in time to freshen up before dinner.
Day 2: Today we travel west the popular seaside resort of Aberystwyth where we board the Vale of Rheidol Railway for a nostalgic journey through some Wales’s most spectacular scenery, from the expansive Welsh Coast to breathtaking valley landscapes and waterfalls. During our 1-hour journey, on the narrow-gauge steam locomotive, we climb 700ft from the coast to the heart of the Cambrian Mountains. We arrive in Devil’s Bridge and have some free time before beginning our return journey back to Aberystwyth where we can visit the Railway’s, Engine Shed Museum with its collection of locomotives. This afternoon, enjoy free time in this delightful seaside resort with its colourful houses, mile long Victorian Promenade and the oldest pier in Wales. There is also great shopping and an abundance of eateries.
Day 3: This morning, we travel to Llanfair and board the historic light railway for our one-way journey to Welshpool. Steaming serenely through the beautiful countryside the train runs alongside a river, through farms and into the Powis Estate, with its pheasants, deer and a variety of wild flowers. There will be free time in Welshpool before heading to Powis Castle later this afternoon. Built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress and with views across the Severn Valley, Powis Castle is one of the most prominent castles in Wales. The interior is furnished with decorative fabrics, world-class paintings, furniture and tapestries, as well as the unique Clive Collection of South Asian artefacts. The world-famous garden retains many of its original features including 17th century Italianate terraces lined with vibrant herbaceous borders and 30ft yew trees, an Edwardian formal garden and peaceful woodland areas.
Day 4; Our day begins with a visit to the Elan Valley Visitor Centre where we are joined by a local ranger for our guided coach tour of this stunningly beautiful area. Nestled in the heart of the rugged Cambrian Mountains, the picturesque and unspoilt Elan Valley sprawls over 70 square miles. Famous for its spectacular dams and scenery, the Valley is home to sweeping landscapes, reservoirs, aqueducts and is a haven for wildlife. This afternoon we return to hotel for some free time, perhaps enjoy the hotel’s wonderful leisure facilities, wander into the town or switch off from it all in the lounge or gardens.
Day 5: After breakfast this morning we being our journey home.
