Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1: We arrive at our peaceful, welcoming hotel in time for dinner.

Day 2: This morning, we travel to the picturesque, medieval market town of Saffron Walden, on the outskirts of Essex. Made prosperous in the 1500s for growing the prized spice, saffron, the town has a rich heritage and still retains many beautiful buildings including St Mary’s Church and the Old Sun Inn.  A market has been held in the town since 1141 and there will be time to browse the vast array of stalls selling a range of goods from locally farmed produce and handmade items to antiques and collectables. This afternoon we visit the spacious grounds and estate of one of England’s grandest mansions, Audley End. Whether you’re exploring its impressive great hall, state apartments, Gothic-style chapel or the servants’ wing you’ll discover what life was like above and below stairs at this delightful Victorian Country House. There will also be time to stroll around the magnificent gardens designed by Capability Brown.

Day 3: Today, we visit Cambridge with time at leisure to explore. With the architectural splendour of its university colleges at the centre you will be spoilt for choice of what to do and see in this compact city. Perhaps take a walking tour and see the instantly recognisable King’s College Chapel or relax with a guided punt on the River Cam. Many precious treasures are on show at Cambridge University’s principal museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum which houses world-class collections of art and antiquities spanning centuries and civilisations. Green-fingered visitors might like a trip to the Botanic Gardens,  a treasure trove of over 8,000 plant species including nine National Collections and a wonderful arboretum. If shopping is your passion Cambridge has it all with some of the finest independent boutiques, a seven day a week market, three shopping centres and all the high street brands you can imagine.

Day 4: Our excursion this morning takes us to the charming city of Ely. Surrounded by the Fens, the UK’s second smallest city is a quintessential jewel in the heart of East Cambridgeshire. Famous for its magnificent Norman cathedral there will be time at leisure to stroll through the pretty streets and perhaps grab a bargain or two at the weekly market.  This afternoon we visit Oliver Cromwell’s House where we learn more about the life of this fascinating historic figure and the part he played in the English Civil War. Take a walk through the haunted bedroom and experience what life was like on the battlefields with impressive interactive displays and special exhibitions.

Day 5: After breakfast, we make our way home.
