A Sparkling Weekend in Champagne | Crosskeys Short Breaks
The city of Reims has a special place in the history of France, the home of Champagne and a town of art, culture and heritage. With around 200 kilometres of underground tunnels, holding 250 million bottles of champagne, our itinerary includes visits to two of the most famous champagne cellars known around the world. We also spend time in Epernay the ‘Capital of Champagne’ and home to The Avenue du Champagne a UNESCO World Heritage site and regarded by many as the most expensive avenue in the world, due to the huge volume of the most precious nectar stored in the cellars beneath.

Itinerary
Day 1: We arrive at our hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2: We start the day in Reims where we are joined by a local guide for a walking tour of the city. Discover its fascinating history and diverse heritage as our expert guide brings the city of Reims to life. The highlight attraction is the Notre-Dame Cathedral, where the Kings of France were crowned for over 1,000 years. Larger and more grandiose than its famous namesake in Paris, the façade of this this masterpiece of Gothic architecture is adorned with 2,303 sculptured figures, gargoyles and remarkable stained glass windows. After time for lunch, we will enjoy an excursion to the G.H Mumm Champagne house. Spread across almost 25 kilometres in the heart of Reims, the underground passageways are home to almost 200 years of history. Our visit includes a guided tour and tasting of their delicious symbolic Mumm Champagne. NB: Please note access to the cellars themselves are via stairs only.
Day 3: Today we follow the ‘Champagne Route’ from Reims towards Epernay. We will have a short stop in Hautvillers, a typically French village with breath-taking views of the sweeping vineyards and famous as being the birthplace of Dom Perignon. Later this morning we arrive in the charming riverside town of Epernay, with free time to explore and to enjoy some delicious French gastronomy. In the afternoon, we will visit the Avenue du Champagne. This prestigious street is lined with a succession of castles, mansions and impressive Champagne houses such as Moet & Chandon & Champagne Mercier. The culmination of our day is a guided tour of Champagne Mercier. Discover the House’s heritage as we travel by train through a section of the 18 kilometres of underground tunnels and discover the art of production and expertise of the cellar men. At the end of the tour enjoy a tasting, guided by an expert sommelier. At the end of our visit we return to our hotel.
Day 4: After breakfast this morning we say au revoir and begin our return journey home

Located approximately 4km from the centre of the city, the Mercure Reims Parc des Expositions Is modern in design and displays works by local artists throughout its public areas.
The bar and brasserie-style restaurant have a contemporary décor and there is an outdoor terrace area. All rooms are en-suite with TV, tea & coffee making facilities, hairdryer and free Wi-FI. Leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool with sun loungers. The hotel has a lift.
