The Beautiful Lakes & Windermere Cruise
5 Days Away
Ambleside is on the shore of Lake Windermere and has inspired many writers and poets, some of its literary residents have included William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter, who knows what literary musings a visit here may evoke, a short walk from the town is the Stock Ghyll Force, a stunning 70 foot waterfall which used to drive the local watermills the only one remaining is the bridge house which is one of the most photographed scenes in the Lake District. Grasmere is the delightful village where Wordsworth made his home, and there are a plethora of tributes to him, buried in St Oswald’s Church the contemplative Wordsworth Daffodil Gardens are a fitting memorial. The tiny higgledy-piggledy village of Hawkshead is the home of The Beatrix Potter Gallery, the offices of her husband, William Heelis, which houses delightful exhibitions of her original drawings and paintings.
Built around the pretty market square, Keswick has plenty of shops and galleries, pop down any side street and you will be surprised by another unique retailer. Visit the Victorian Museum virtually unchanged since it was built and admire the plethora of curiosities including a 700 year old cat! If you have time take a stroll through one of the parks or wander down to Derwent to the edge of the lake.
The quiet seaside resort of Grange-over-Sands has a lovely Edwardian flavour and is reminiscent of a more sedate way of life, situated on the shores of Morecambe Bay it is a bird watchers paradise, with a tremendous range of birds making their home here. Stopping in pretty Kendal, this bustling gateway town is situated on the banks of the River Kent, famous for its mint cake which is definitely worth a try, the grey stone of which most of the town seems to built can make it seem a sombre place but don’t be deceived the interesting museums and funky art centre show a whole different side to the town.
We will also a enjoy a relaxing cruise on Lake Windermere, sailing from Lakeside to Bowness where on arrival there is the opportunity to admire the beautiful lake views and appreciate why Beatrix Potter took so much inspiration from this idyllic location.
