The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture by Antony Gormley, standing on a former colliery site in Gateshead. Completed in February 1998, the striking figure of an angel reaches 20 metres in height with a wingspan of 54 metres and weighs approximately 200 tonnes. Crafted from COR-TEN weathering steel, its distinctive rusted patina to ensure decades of resilience in the elements. Engineered, with sculpture’s vertical ribs channel wind into deep foundations, enabling it to withstand gusts over 100 mph. it stands not only as an artistic marvel but as a powerful emblem of cultural regeneration—honouring the region’s industrial past.
