Situated in a perfect horseshoe bay, and protected by the island of Kerrera, the town of Oban is the ‘Gateway to the Isles’ its busy port a hive of activity. Dominated by McCaig’s Tower, a walk to this folly perched on the summit of Battery Hill, is rewarded with stunning views of not only Oban but the islands which its port serves. A visit to Oban Distillery is a must, situated in the centre of the town it is the ideal way to learn about whisky, and perhaps sample a dram or two. With two cathedrals to visit, a museum, and multitude of cafés and restaurants, there is plenty to see in Oban itself, but a short stroll along the seafront to Dunollie Castle and Museum is an incredibly interesting place to discover about the history of this town and its inhabitants.
We arrive in Mull in the picturesque Tobermoray, with its colourful houses and pretty harbour, we travel through this wildly beautiful island and board the Iona ferry for the short journey, where St Columba established a monastery over 1,400 years ago. Many pilgrims have completed this journey and the first place to visit is usually the stunning Iona Abbey, the burial place of many Scottish, Irish and Norwegian Kings, but do not miss the oldest surviving building on the island, St Oran’s Church which dates from 1150. The tranquillity of the island also provides a home for much wildlife which enables the opportunity to appreciate birds and sea life in their natural habitat.
The Isle of Seil is only separated from the mainland by the narrowest of channels, linked by an 18th Century humpback bridge which is known as the ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’. The island is full of contrast the white workers cottages, stunningly set against the black slate cliffs and the sea.
The Isle of Islay is the most southerly of the western isles, famous for whisky production it is home to no less than 8 distilleries, partly due to the unique growing conditions of the island. With stunning scenery, much of the island is a remote wilderness and amazing wildlife, the memory of here will live on long after your visit.
Campbeltown has a surprising number of beautiful buildings, many of them listed, it is home to the oldest purpose built cinema in Scotland the ‘wee picture house’ which is well worth a visit, the drive via Loch Tarbet and the Sound of Gigha will take in some breath taking scenery.
