The historic city of Durham, with its winding cobbled street and fantastic World Heritage Site, is a living piece of history, the castle, built to keep the Scots out, is now a renowned University, and far more welcoming to Scottish visitors these days. The Cathedral, built in honour of St Cuthbert, featured in the Harry Potter film’s as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry, it is known to be one of the finest examples of Norman Architecture, and view from the top of the tower is well worth the climb. The cosmopolitan city of Newcastle offers fantastic shopping opportunities, the Newcastle Castle Keep is a reminder of the city’s historic past, and the Great North Museum: Hancock is an incredibly interesting free museum which is definitely worth a visit.
Beamish Museum is a living example of how life used to be, walk down the cobbled streets, take a tram around the reconstructed town, peruse the stock at the shops or buy some cakes at the bakery. Visit the school house in the 1900’s pit village, or take a stroll around the farm, before the use of machinery became commonplace, this museum gives an opportunity to see how everyday life has changed.The unique Holy Island, which is cut off twice a day from the mainland, has become a sanctuary for wildlife, the stunning ruins of Lindisfarne Priory highlight its importance as a place of pilgrimage and you can discover more about this and much more about the island in the Lindisfarne Heritage Centre.
