Step back in time with this fascinating look at how things used to be in north east England. We visit remarkable Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, and Locomotion, part of the National Railway Museum. We visit Head of Steam, telling the story of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the railway industry of Darlington. Take a ride on the Wensleydale Railway into the Yorkshire Dales through the Tour De France town of Leyburn with spectacular views, and spend time in the historic city of Durham, wandering the cobbled streets, visiting the markets or enjoying the countryside.

Itinerary

Day 1

Today we travel down to our hotel. We will make a stop along the way for a couple of hours at a mystery destination. 

Day 2

Head of Steam and Darlington Railway

This morning we visit Head of Steam, a unique railway museum located on the 1825 route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first steam-powered passenger railway. We travel south to Leeming Bar for a relaxing ride on the Wensleydale Railway through the rolling countryside to Leyburn.

Head of Steam, formerly known as the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum, is a railway museum located on the 1825 route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which was the world's first steam-powered passenger railway. It is based inside the station building at the North Road railway station. Its exhibits are devoted to the area formerly served by the North Eastern Railway with a particular focus on the Stockton & Darlington Railway and the railway industry of Darlington.

 

Day 3

Head of Steam and Wensleydale Railway

 

This morning we visit Head of Steam, a unique railway museum located on the 1825 route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first steam-powered passenger railway. We travel south to Leeming Bar for a relaxing ride on the Wensleydale Railway through the rolling countryside to Leyburn.

Day 4

Beamish

Today we visit Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, a living, working museum, set in 300 acres of beautiful Durham countryside. Trams rattle along the cobbled streets and costumed folk bring to life how things were in north east England in the 1820s,1910s and 1940s. But what makes Beamish rather special are the buildings. They’re not replicas, but have been brought, brick by brick, from around the region and rebuilt to give visitors a real sense of history.

Day 5

National railway Museum Shildon

Locomotion, previously known as Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon or Shildon Locomotion Museum is a railway museum in ShildonCounty Durham, England. The museum is part of the Science Museum Group.

After the museum we join the coach for our journey back home.
