On Arrival in Rotterdam we continue towards Germany for our overnight stop close to Berlin
Arriving in Krakow today; pay a visit to one of the most moving and poignant sites in the whole of Europe. The concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau is listed by UNESCO World Heritage as a site of great historical importance given that it was here that 1.5 million people were killed by the Nazis between 1942 and 1945. You will have a guided tour through the museums and the original camp barracks. This evening settle into your hotel base.
After breakfast you will be met by your guide for a 2-hour walking tour of Poland’s former capital, Krakow, considered by many to be the most beautiful city in the country. This afternoon you will have free time to explore further at your leisure.
Day 5Wieliczka Salt Mine
Today we leave Krakow behind and travel to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, a stunning “underground town” located on nine levels with chambers connected by corridors. Your will have the chance to visit twenty of the historic chambers with their saline lakes, remarkable salt sculptures and the marvellous St Kinga Chapel. There is a shortened tour available by lift for groups who are not able to manage the stairs (there are 800 of them!) which must be booked in advance.
You also could enjoy lunch in the underground Miners Tavern before heading back to Krakow.
With a tour guide in tow for the full day, we head south towards the Tatras Mountains, part of the Carpathian mountain chain in eastern Europe, which creates a natural border between Slovakia and Poland. Both Slovak and Polish sides are protected as national parkland and are popular destinations for winter and summer sports. The Tatras are home to wildlife including the Tatra chamois, marmot, lynx and bears. Slovakia has the highest mountain in the range: 2,655m Gerlach Peak. We then continue to the lovely ‘folklore’ town of Zakopane where your guide will take you down Krupowki Street, the main pedestrian area with numerous restaurants and an array of boutiques. You could also choose to take the funicular railway to Gubalowka Hill - the ride covers the 1298m-long route in just 3.5 minutes and climbs around 300m - from here we can enjoy fabulous views of the town and the surrounding Tatra Mountains. We then head back to your hotel for you last night’s evening meal.
After breakfast, begin your journey home with en route overnight in Germany.
Continue travelling towards Rotterdam where we will take the overnight ferry back to Hull.
