Beamish & Whitby
Why not join us for a relaxing tour of all the best culture and heritage in the North East? Over three days, you’ll visit Harrogate – a Victorian Spa Town, Beamish Open-Air Museum and Whitby – treasure of the Yorkshire Coast. You’ll have the chance to delve into the industrial past, explore the elegant streets of Harrogate and wander along winding cobbled streets in Whitby.
PLEASE NOTE: Price is per person and based on two people sharing a twin/double room. Single room supplements and upgrades are not included.
After a morning pick-up from your local departure-point, you’ll head to Harrogate. With its beautiful Victorian buildings and verdant gardens, Harrogate is one of Yorkshire’s most elegant destinations. You’ll have time to explore the wonderful shopping areas, perhaps take a relaxing walk in one of the luscious gardens, or indulge in exquisite cakes and patisseries in Betty’s famous Tea Rooms.
In the late afternoon, you’ll re-join the coach and head to your hotel.
After breakfast, you’ll leave the hotel and head to Beamish. The UK’s most popular open-air museum was the brainchild of Doctor Frank Atkinson who had visited Scandinavian Folk Museums in the 1950s and was inspired to create a similar open-air museum in the North East, to preserve and educate people about the industrial heritage of the area. Beamish is now a collection of perfectly re-created villages and industrial cornerstones, which span from the 1820s to the 1940s, all open for you to explore. There’s also the chance to have a ride in a vintage tram or steam-engine. There are shops where you can buy sweets and other treats, all correct to the period they’re set in – don’t miss the traditional fish and chip shop, which still uses Beef-dripping and newspaper – just like it used to be!
After checking out of the hotel you’ll head to Whitby. From the atmospheric Abbey, towering over the winding cobbled streets and hidden ‘Yards’, giving way to a windswept beach and working harbour – Whitby is not your traditional coastal town. Here you’ll discover ancient vampiric legends, the story of James Cook and his discoveries, the tumultuous history of Whitby Abbey and, quite possibly, the best fish and chips in Yorkshire. Take a tour on one of the vintage buses, or perhaps sail the seas on a Pirate Ship! Climb the steps to the Abbey and marvel in the fabulous views as well as the utterly beautiful ruins themselves. Wander through the cobbled streets, and discover unique shopping experiences, as well as delicious food. And for the brave, there’s always the Dracula Experience, which tells you all about the famous Vampire Prince and his adventures in England.
