A twin centre tour to Catalonia with Eurostar to Avignon
A two-week executive coach holiday from Kent to the Catalonia Coast, staying dinner, bed & breakfast first at the 4* H-Top Calella Palace Hotel in Calella, and then for the second week at the 4* Hotel Best San Francisco in Salou. As you travel between Ashford (or St Pancras) and Avignon by direct Eurostar service, there is no long distance marathon aboard the coach and you can look forward to being in resort on your first evening. And as your luggage goes ahead with the coach (pick up and return costs included), you can sit back and enjoy your 200mph Eurostar journey to the South of France without having to hump any suitcases on the train too!
The direct Eurostar service leaves St Pancras at 07:17 and Ashford at 07:55 arriving in Avignon at 14:08, so allowing for the time differential it's just over five hours between Ashford and Avignon, where your Buzzlines coach will await. From here it is a four-hour drive almost entirely on motorway following the Mediterranean coastline into Spain, so we can expect to be in our hotel in Calella in plenty of time for supper and perhaps even a stroll along the beachside promenade before dark. It will be one of those incongruous days where it's difficult to join the two ends!
For the first week we will aim for mix of easy days relaxing in resort with alternate days spent exploring the region. Whilst in Calella we will certainly schedule a free day in Barcelona, and we'll visit the close-by gardens of Marimutra, the Cava vineyards and the famous monastery of Montserrat. It's worth noting too that Calella is served by regular and inexpensive trains running between Barcelona and the historic provincial city of Girona, so there is good break-out potential if you want to explore on your own for the day.
The holiday capital of the Costa del Maresme, Calella has numerous outdoor terraces, restaurants and a lively nightlife which - along with its beaches - all make it an attractive destination for visitors. The town extends for three kilometres and is bordered by beaches of golden sand on the Mediterranean and the tributaries of the Montnegre before they flow into the sea. Its outstanding location makes this a first-rate seaside resort, and it has received the Blue Flag European quality award on numerous occasions. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of water sports thanks to its mild year-round climate and the excellent facilities at its Yacht Club.

Our Week-1 Hotel in Calella
A week into our stay, we check out of our hotel in Calella and head down the coast to our hotel for our second week, the 4* Hotel Best San Francisco in Salou, close to the port city of Tarragona. It's not much more than two hours journey so we will expect to be enjoying a break in Tarragona over lunchtime and onwards to check-in to the hotel during the afternoon. Tarragona has lots of historic appeal. One of the foremost Roman settlements in Spain, the city's sights include its elevated part Gothic, part Romanesque cathedral, ampitheatre, archaeological museum, Fòrum de la Colònia and its great aqueduct de les Ferreres, nowadays a spectacular walking trail within a peaceful ecology park. And of course it's a great place to just sit in the square and enjoy the Spring sunshine over a glass or two of Rioja!
Salou is another perfect Mediterranean beach setting and like Calella it has excellent rail communications – just a few minutes to hop into Tarragona and there are good train services down the coast to Valencia and onwards to Benidorm and Alicante. For our second week we will again offer a mix of easy days in resort and coach excursions. Salou is home to the celebrated Port Aventura theme park, boasting one of the fastest roller-coasters in Europe as well as a host of other attractions, but if you are more for relaxation you always have the hotel pool as well as the miles of lovely beach, and again there are good local train connections if you want to head off under your own steam to visit Benidorm or Alicante.
In keeping with the orange-blossom theme, we will enjoy a day in the heart of the citrus groves at Borriana and after some free time in town we visit a museum dedicated to the orange! We will also trip down to Valencia for a sightseeing day in the city, and we will schedule a guided day following the River Ebre from its delta – notable for its 2000 hectares of rice plantation – inland to the small town of Flix where we will break to enjoy some excellent riverside walking. Flix is spectacular itself in its setting on a meander of the River Ebre, but it's also the gateway to a local wildlife reserve which follows the river upstream to the next village, Riba-Roja. This is a walk of about 5km and the reserve's guide leaflet tells us to expect amongst other things Camargue horses, otters, spiny-footed lizards and birdlife too extensive to name in full but including Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Black Kite, White Stork, Bee Eater, Kingfisher, Hoopoe, Cetti's warbler, Penduline Tit and the Marsh Harrier (Symbol of the Reserve).
Come the end of our second week we will depart Salou at 07:30 for our motorway run back to Avignon where allowing for comfort breaks we aim to arrive by 14:30 for the 15:55 train departure for Ashford and London. The return journey breaks at Lille Station for immigration formalities and we are then due into Ashford at 21:34 and St Pancras at 22:12.
Marimutra Gardens – not far from Calella – present a vast range of Mediterranean exotics
