5 Days | Three Train Rides plus Lakes and Dales!

Our hotel’s location offers ideal access to three scenic train journeys and some of the most sublime landscapes in the region. One highlight is the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct—a true symbol of British railway heritage—which we cross by train and admire again from a different perspective by coach. On our non-rail day, we follow the historic line of Hadrian’s Wall, visiting the charming town of Hexham and the tranquil beauty of Kielder Water.

Itinerary

Itinerary

Monday North with a late lunchtime stop in Kendal, a market town on the edge of the Lake District.

Tuesday We begin with a drive to Longtown, then follow the peaceful Liddesdale Valley to the stunning Kielder Water and Forest Park. After a relaxing break at the visitor centre, we continue through Bellingham to the historic market town of Hexham, dominated by its impressive abbey overlooking the square. We return via the route of Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches
76-miles from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth, offering glimpses of Roman Britain along the way.

Wednesday Our first rail adventure starts in Carlisle, following the dramatic Cumbrian coastline through Maryport and Whitehaven, with sweeping sea views all the way to Ravenglass. Here, we board the charming Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway—affectionately known as L’al Ratty—for a delightful steam train ride through seven miles of Lake District scenery, from the coast to the foothills of England’s highest mountains.

Thursday Today we head into the Yorkshire Dales, stopping at Kirkby Lonsdale to enjoy its bustling weekly market. We then travel past the majestic Ribblehead Viaduct, through Hortonin- Ribblesdale, and on to Settle. From here we embark on one of England’s most spectacular rail journeys—the legendary Settle to Carlisle line. With towering viaducts, deep tunnels, and beautifully kept station gardens, this route offers unforgettable views as we travel through dramatic landscapes back to Carlisle.

Friday The holiday is not over as we drive over the Kirkstone Pass and make a stop in Bowness-on-Windermere. We continue along the eastern edge of Windermere with some great views, before heading south.
