Next we visit Lyddwhere in the 18th and 19th centuries the townwas notorious for the activities of ‘owlers’ (Localsmugglers hooting to each other at dead ofnight). Have a look at All Saints Church – TheCathedral of the Marsh, which has a soaring132ft tower, and at 199ft is Kent’s longestchurch, parts of it date back to Roman times. Aswe head inland spot the tower of St Mildred’sChurch at Tenterden. Horatio, Lord Nelson’sdaughter by his mistress Emma Hamilton, wasat one time the vicar’s wife. Known as the ‘Jewelin the Weald’ the town makes an ideal place tofinish the day.
We begin with a ride to historicFaversham which nestles between the ruralgently sloping Downs and the austere NorthKent marshes and is one of southern England’smost charming towns. It now has over 475 listedbuildings and a wide selection of independentshops. We have time for lunch here before weleave for our afternoon visit to the ShepherdNeame Brewery for a guided ‘behind thescenes’ tour. Afterwards we round off the visitwith Hop Pickers afternoon tea.
