We depart and make our way toDerbyshire arriving late afternoon at theHallmark Mickleover Hotel for the next 4night’s with dinner, bed and breakfast withtea/coffee and biscuits served on arrival.
Our first visit today is to Calke Abbey,in Derbyshire which is in the care of theNational Trust after being left in a state ofdisrepair and negligence with little restorationand tells the story of the dramatic decline ofa grand country-house estate with peelingpaintwork, overgrown courtyards and manyabandoned areas vividly portraying a periodof the 20th century when numerous countryestates did not survive. From here we finishthe day with a look at nearby Melbourne HallGarden – The City of Melbourne in Australiatakes its name from here.
This morning we make our waynorth to the Derwent Valley and Duffield where we join the Ecclesbourne ValleyRailway for a ride through picturesquecountryside to Wirksworth. Re-joiningthe coach we make our way to Matlock, adelightful Peak District town where we havetime to obtain lunch. Our afternoon visit is toKedleston Hall, a 1760’s mansion designed asa show palace with lavish décor, paintings,furniture and sculptures. Set in 820 acres ofbeautiful parkland, ideal for a relaxing strollbefore ending the visit at the café and shop
Our outing takes us first to thepicturesque market town of Bakewell wherewe take a break and you can visit the original‘Bakewell Tart’ or ‘Pudding’ shop to enjoy asample and explore this interesting town.We then continue to spend the afternoon atChatsworth House, home of the Duke andDuchess of Devonshire where you can visit thehouse, gardens and after looking in the shop,you can enjoy a well-earned cuppa
After breakfast we depart for home
