We depart and make our way north arriving at the Gisborough Hall Hotel late afternoon for the next 4 nights stay with dinner, bed and breakfast.
Our first visit today is to Preston Parkand the Hall Museum. Take a walk back in timethrough the cobbled Victorian street andimagine life as it was in times past. At PrestonHall we join the ‘Teesside Princess’ and take agentle cruise on the River Tees through beautifulcountryside to the cobbled town of Yarm,famous for its location on the River and the aweinspiring railway viaduct. In the afternoon wedrive through Bilsdale - “Little Switzerland”, andpast the Sun Inn, which has had the samelandlord for 200 years! We then pass RievaulxAbbey, and drop into Helmsley with its 12thcentury castle. On the way back to the hotel wetravel over the spectacular Sutton Bank, givingyou fantastic views of the moors and across theVale of York.
Today we visit Thirsk, home ofJames Herriot, and a chance to take in theacclaimed World of James Herriot Centre.Afterwards we experience a piece of history andride on the ‘Wensleydale Railway’, newly openedafter sleeping for over fifty years. Later we endthe day with a visit to Richmond where you willfind a castle, the tiny Georgian Theatre, TheGreen Howards Museum and the RichmondshireMuseum, which houses the ‘set’ from “AllCreatures Great & Small”.
We travel over the moors, across BlakeyRidge, through picturesque Hutton-le-Hole toPickering, where we join the North YorkshireMoors Railway for a steam train journey throughrugged moorland to Whitby – passing throughGoathland – ‘Aidensfield’ in TV’s ‘Heartbeat’ – onthe way. Whitby is a maritime town, fishing portand seafarer’s haven, bursting with character andunique. Wander the alleyways and narrow streetsand perhaps climb the steps up to Whitby Abbey.
After breakfast we leave and begin our homeward journey.
The stunning 4 star rated Gisborough Hall Hotel dates back to the 19th
