We depart and make our way toCumbria, arriving late afternoon at our hotel forthe next 4 nights with dinner, bed and breakfastwith tea/coffee and biscuits served on arrival.
Today we head for Longtown and drivealong Liddesdale as we make our way topicturesque Kielder Water and Forest Park. Wetake a break at the visitor centre beforecontinuing to Bellingham and Hexham,dominated by the Abbey overlooking the marketsquare. This afternoon we return along the pathof Hadrian’s Wall, which stretched some 76 milesfrom the Tyne to the Solway
This morning we commence ourfirst train journey of the day in Carlisle where theline follows the Cumbrian coastline throughMaryport and Whitehaven and the stunning seaviews stay with us to Ravenglass. Here we jointhe Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, L’al Rattysteam train, from the coast to the foothills ofEngland’s highest mountains which is sevenmiles of steam in the Lake District National Park
We travel into the Yorkshire Dales toKirkby Lonsdale, where we find the weekly market in full swing. Then we travel on past theimmense Ribblehead Viaduct, through charmingHorton-in-Ribblesdale to Settle. Later we take inthe most spectacular train journey on a mainline railway in the whole of England – thefamous Settle to Carlisle line where we travelalong the whole line through majestic scenery toCarlisle
After breakfast we depart and begin ourhomeward journey
