Chess The Musical

London Coliseum

2.30pm matinee

Another fantastic West End musical is revived in the capital in 2018, giving audiences a chance to revisit a story that set the world alight back in the 1980s and provided a stunning portrayal of Cold War tensions.

That show is Chess, the brainchild of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, which first appeared in the West End when the Cold War was still in full swing. Whilst that period of history is over, the tensions we feel in the modern world still lend themselves to the unease upon which Chess can take hold.

During the Cold War it seemed that America and Soviet Union wanted to compete at everything, with the Space Race being the obvious example. Even the films got in on the action, with Rocky IV depicting a fight between the American Rocky and the Soviet Ivan Drago. For Chess, however, we turn our attentions to the world's most famous game as two Chess champions go head to head and the whole world watches.

Poignant and gripping, Chess is deservedly one of the most celebrated musicals of all time and it helps that it contains some high profile and admired songs as part of its score, from One Night In Bangkok to I Know Him So Well, ensuring that it has captured imaginations and stood the test of time.

It also helps that the show comes from Andersson and Ulvaeus, who both worked together for the chart-topping group ABBA and subsequently provided the music for another West End musical in Mamma Mia! Together they have had a profound effect on popular culture and this is proven once again with return of Chess to the capital in 2018.

The London Coliseum has been the home of various musicals in recent times as the venue branches out from its usual fare. Bat Out of Hell The Musical and Carousel are amongst the productions that have been staged here and it has added to the depth of venues offers high profile musicals.

Chess, under the direction of Laurence Connor, makes its triumphant return to the capital with a run at the London Coliseum on Thursday 26th April 2018.
