Day 1 Early morning departure to Dover for the ferry to Calais and on to Dijon for an overnight stop. (Dinner not included).
Day 2 Continuing the journey into Italy arriving at the lovely spa town of Montecatini Terme for a seven night stay.
Day 3 This morning you will head off to a farmhouse for a hands-on cooking class of how to make pasta, and then you will be rewarded with a lovely lunch. In the afternoon you will travel to Lucca, the birthplace of Puccini for a two hour guided tour. You will see its famous Opera House, well preserved Renaissance walls and much more.
Day 4 You will depart on an unforgettable excursion to the art and culture capital of Florence by train. On the guided tour you will see some of the most important sites of the old town: The Duomo Complex (entrance charge applies), is considered one of the world’s best examples of fine architecture; the Palazzo Vecchio incorporates in its façade some of the most distinctive elements of Renaissance buildings; the Ponte Vecchio and its famous jewellery shops. You will sample a tasty porchetta sandwich, flavoured with garlic, lemon zest and other seasonings and many locals regard it as the world’s best sandwich. The afternoon will be at leisure to explore the city on your own, perhaps view the real Michelangelo statue of David in the Accademia, or the paintings in the Uffizi gallery or just enjoy views of the city from the Boboli Gardens.
Day 5 A day at leisure. Take the funicular railway to Montecatini Alto for some spectacular panoramic views of Montecatini whilst enjoying a beverage or two, or use the local train service to visit nearby towns such as Pistoia with its medieval town centre.
Day 6 Today you will be driven past the vineyards sprinkled throughout the hillside of the Chianti countryside – Chianti is more than a fabulous wine, it is a lovely region too. Enjoy the winding country roads lined with cypresses. You will then take part in a unique experience searching for truffles with a truffle-hunter and his dog through the woods. (We recommend suitable footwear and clothing, as the fields can be wet and slippery) You will learn where to hunt for truffles, how the dog is trained, how to clean truffles and create tasty dishes. All the fresh air will certainly build up your appetite and you will be rewarded by a tasting, accompanied by local wine.
Day 7 Discover the ‘Manhattan of the Middle Ages’ – San Gimignano, the town of fine towers. Famous for its medieval architecture, its unique preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, art and architectural treasures of its historic facades, and with its hilltop setting and encircling walls, form ‘an unforgettable skyline’. Then visit one of the best known in the world gelateria mentioned in the most important world guides for a tasting or two.
Day 8 Pisa is a ‘must see’ destination for any Tuscan visitor. See the iconic leaning Tower and the magnificent Square of Miracles during your guided tour. In the afternoon you will visit Lari, set within castle walls, where you will take part in a cherry liquor tasting and visit the smallest pasta factory. Though mini, the Famiglia Martelli have been making their pasta since 1926. You will walk through the factory that gives an insight to the art of making pasta, the original way. The process is a long one and what the family produce in a year can be made in a modern factory in five hours! Why not purchase a bag or two to take home.
Day 9 Time to depart Tuscany and travel to Dijon for your overnight stop. (Dinner not included).
Day 10 After breakfast, depart the hotel and commence the homeward journey.
