Day 2 A specialist guide will join you on the coach to bring to life the stories and memorial sites of both WWl and WWll in the Mons area. Visit Nimy Bridge, where the first two Victoria Crosses of WWl were won during the Battle of Mons in 1914. At St Symphorien Military Cemetery you will hear the stories of the first soldier to be killed in WWl, and the last, just minutes before the armistice in 1918. In the afternoon you will visit the pretty town of Dinant, known for its imposing citadel perched high above the River Meuse, time to explore and enjoy the included river cruise before returning to hotel.
Day 3 Today you will travel to Mons. Throughout the weekend, numerous tanks and military vehicles are on show and in use in the fields surrounding Mons. Tank rides are available for the more adventurous visitor. In the city centre there’s a military flea market and a period camp. During your visit, we have included the Mons Memorial Museum, a venue where you will discover the complex realities of the phenomena of war and learn of the day to day lives of soldiers and civilians in times of peace, of war and of occupation. Time to also explore the historic city centre.
Day 4 After breakfast, depart hotel and head for Lille, with its numerous museums, monuments, Town Hall, Belfry and its old town. After some free time you will leave for the port of Calais and the homeward journey.
