West Somerset Railway

Itinerary

Bishop's Palace Wells

Day 1 Morning departure for the journey to Clarks Village for lunch and shopping before travelling the short distance to the hotel for a four night stay.

Day 2 Today you will travel on the West Somerset Railway from Bishops Lydeard through the scenic countryside of the Quantock Hills to Minehead. On arrival you will have time to obtain some lunch before you are taken to visit Dunster, located in the Exmoor National Park’s rolling hills and has over 200 listed buildings. The village is well preserved to maintain its historic charm.

Day 3 Today you will travel to Wells, the smallest city in England to visit the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years. Enjoy this stunning medieval palace, along with its
14 acres of RHS partner gardens. Surrounded by a breath-taking moat, you can cross a flagstone drawbridge, walk under the portcullis and experience a true hidden gem in the heart of the city whilst situated next to Wells Cathedral.

Day 4 Today you will travel through the rugged gorges of Wookey Hole and the famous Cheddar Gorge where we have included a visit to the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company, and the only cheesemaker in Cheddar for a viewing and tasting. Then onto Montacute House, a masterpiece of Elizabethan architecture and design built at the end of the 16th century. The ground floor is open to explore (1st and 2nd floors currently closed) along with the gardens, Porters’ Lodes, Prospect Tower and of course the Courtyard café.

Day 5 After breakfast, depart the hotel and commence the homeward journey.
