The Georgian coastal town of Whitehaven was the first planned town of the industrial era, built around the port which is now a marina for pleasure boats. The planned streets were used as a model for New York and other American cities. Attractions include the Beacon exhibition, The Rum Story museum, and the church of St Nicholas, where George Washington’s grandmother is buried.

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Full Day - Grasmere & Keswick
The Armitt Museum houses literary collections and artefacts from the lives of Lake District writers (entry fee applies)./nKeswick is the busiest town in the North Lakes, situated beside scenic Derwent Water./nDiscover the fascinating history of an everyday item at the Pencil Museum (entry fee applies). /nLocal artefacts are displayed at the Keswick Museum & Art Gallery (entry fee applies)./n

Day 3 - Half Day Cockermouth
The attractive small town of Cockermouth was the birthplace of poet William Wordsworth, physicist John Dalton, and Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian. Today it is home to Jennings Brewery, the Kirkgate Arts Centre and a museum of tools and ironmongery. /n

Day 4 - Full Day - Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway & Muncaster Castle
We enjoy a scenic trip on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (included in tour cost)/nThe railway climbs from near the Cumbrian coast to the tiny village of Boot in Eskdale./nThe line is known locally as La'al Ratty and its 3 ft gauge predecessor as Owd Ratty./nMuncaster Castle is home to an amazing octagonal library and the Hawk and Owl Centre (entrance included). /n
