Our tour is based in the Newcastle-Gateshead City Region, a fascinating metropolis spectacularly situated on the Tyne. Six bridges span the Tyne as it flows through the city - for centuries a coal port and shipbuilding centre. The elegant 19th century town centre of Newcastle is in classical style. Alleys slope down from the 12th century castle keep and its back gate to the Quayside, where there are timber-framed houses of 16th and 17th century merchants. Landmarks include the cathedral's 15th century 'crown' spire, on top of flying buttresses, and the 133ft monument to Earl Grey who was prime minister in 1830-4.

Day 2 - Full Day - Hadrian's Wall, Chesters Fort & Carlisle

Day 4 - Full Day - Bamburgh & Lindisfarne
Bamburgh is a beautiful coastal town in the heart of Northumberland which is visited by thousands of people every year./nThe notable Bamburgh Castle overlooks the beach and is famous as the home of the former Kings of Northumbria (entry fees apply. May not be suitable for disabled guests)./nThe RNLI Grace Darling Museum commemorates the life of Victorian Britain’s greatest heroine, who risked her life to rescue survivors from the wrecked SS Forfarshire in 1838./nLindisfarne is commonly known as Holy Island due to its religious history dating back to 635AD (visit dependent on tides)./nHoly Island, as seen on Robson Green's Tales from Northumberland, is cut off twice-daily from the rest of the world by fast-moving tides. /nRising from the sheer rock face at the tip of the island is Lindisfarne Castle, built to defend a harbour sheltering English ships during skirmishes with Scotland (entry fees apply)./n
Day 5 - Return Travel
Caledonian Hotel
Located in the heart of Jesmond, a cosmopolitan area of Newcastle with many restaurants, bars and boutiques, about one mile from Newcastle’s city centre, the Caledonian is a comfortable hotel with a friendly feel. There is a small lounge area near the reception, whilst the Billabong Bar and Bistro offers a pleasant atmosphere throughout the day. The public areas have stylish contemporary decor with wooden flooring whilst all 90 bedrooms are modern and have bath or shower, satellite TV, direct dial telephone, hair dryer and tea/coffee making facilities.
