Dunoon is splendidly situated on the western shores of the Firth of Clyde, where Loch Long and Holy Loch join the sea. It boasts some lovely gardens, two bays, and a flat promenade - perfect for that most traditional of seaside occupations, strolling along the prom! There is a modern indoor swimming pool with solarium and sauna, bowling greens, squash and tennis courts and both 9 and 18 hole golf courses. There are two cinemas and, in the season, entertainment at the Queens Hall. Within just a few miles is some of Scotland's most spectacular mountain scenery in the Argyll Forest Park. The journeys along Loch Eck and to Colintraive are amongst the most memorable anywhere in Scotland.

Day 1 - Outward Travel


Day 2 - Loch Lomond & Helensburgh
Loch Lomond is the largest inland stretch of water in Britain (by surface area) at 24 by 4.5 miles./n"Loch Lomond and the Trossachs" was one of the first of the two Scottish national parks, est 2002./nAt the south end of the loch, near Balloch, is the Loch Lomond Shores visitor and shopping complex./nNamed after the wife of Sir James Colquhoun, who founded the town at the end of the 18th century. /nHome to an array of wide, elegant, tree-lined streets, a long promenade and many parks and gardens./nHill House (entry fee applies) is one of Charles and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh's most famous works./n

Day 3 - Lochgoilhead Half Day
Lochgoilhead is a small village situated at the northern end of Loch Goil, a sea loch running into Loch Long./nParts of the James bond film 'From Russia with Love' were filmed in Lochgoilhead and Sean Connery stayed at the Goil Inn./nTo access Lochgoilhed, we traverse the "Rest & be Thankful" pass, which offerst spectacular views on a clear day./n

Day 6 - Isle of Bute
Bute was known to the Vikings as Rothesay, a name now applied to the island's main settlement./nThe circular Rothesay castle (Entrance fees may apply) dates back to the beginning of the 13th century./nBute is home to a several ruined chapels, such as St. Blanes Chapel and St. Ninjans Point./n

Day 7 - The Cowal Peninsula Half Day
Flanked by Loch Long and Loch Fyne, the Cowal Peninsula is a landscape of contrasts, from Munros to seaside villages./nMuch of Cowal is covered by The Argyll Forest Park. The Isle of Bute lies to the south of Cowal, across the Kyles of Bute./nKeep a look out for red squirrels and the rope bridges put in place to protect them from road traffic./n

Selborne Hotel
Superbly situated looking south across the Clyde with pleasant lawns reaching down to the promenade and water’s edge. The Selborne Hotel is a favourite amongst tourists searching for coach holidays to Dunoon. All the public rooms and many of the bedrooms offer uninterrupted views of the river which is a constant source of interest. Ground floor areas include a TV lounge, bar lounge with dance floor, quiet lounge and games room. The Selborne Hotel has 98 bedrooms with central heating and private bath or shower and WC. All rooms have tea/coffee making facilities, hair dryer and TV with radio channels. Entertainment is provided most evenings in the bar lounge. The lift serves almost all rooms.
