Big Ben is silenced for four years for maintenance
Visitors to London will not be able to hear Big Ben’s famous chimes from today as it is silenced for four years to undergo maintenance. It has been 31 years since the clock last had extensive works and there have been problems identified with the mechanisms, pendulum and clock hands which need attention.
Over the period of the four years in which it will take to service the Elizabeth Tower, visitors may see scaffolding to allow access to the exterior clock faces.
However, the clock will still sound for significant events such as Remembrance Sunday and New Year’s Eve.
