A study by VisitBritain has shown that for overseas visitors travelling to the UK, high on their agenda is to explore local parks and gardens instead of museums, castles or galleries.

The results from this study have shown that at least 36% of all visitors to the UK prefer to explore parklands and gardens. This comes marginally above going to the pub, eating out and shopping. Approximately £7.8 billion was spent by tourists enjoying a garden or parkland visit.

It is particularly interesting to see that 2.4 million who enjoyed visiting open spaces were aged between 25-34 compared to just 1.4 million who were between the ages of 55-64. This shows that open spaces, gardens and parklands found in the UK are obviously attracting a younger crowd.

A representative from VisitBritain said "It's hugely encouraging to see our gardens are as popular with the younger generation as they are with 55-plus age groups. These natural areas of beauty are obviously a valuable tourism asset , admired across the world and enjoyed by everyone who takes a holiday in the UK."
