Time for green fingers!
The Door2Tour.com mini guide to the Hampton Court Flower Show.
What do I wear?
There is a lot of walking involved so comfy (water proof) shoes are a must. As you cannot rely on the British weather it’s worth having a jacket and brolly to hand just in case the heavens open as there are very few places to take shelter. If you are planning on buying plants etc., a good sturdy trolley is a good idea.
Should I buy a guide-book?
Not a lot of information is provided beforehand so it is worth buying a guidebook so you know where everything is and can plan your day. Also, it makes a nice souvenir to take home!
What will I see at the Flower Show?
The world’s largest annual flower show. Around 50 inspiring design gardens, tranquil water gardens and several marquees filled with displays of Roses, Floral and Fruit/Vegetables. Local and regional food & drink producers sell their produce with samples to try.
Can I seek advice from the experts?
You can learn about growing your own plants and produce with the RHS on hand to give gardening advice. Don’t forget to take a look at the Grapevine Theatre featuring live coverage of the show and interviews with famous Gardeners.
What can I do with my purchases?
To save those aching limbs, there are two plant and product crèches available for you to leave your purchases during your visit – one on the north and one on the south side of the showground. Just don’t forget to collect your purchases before you leave.
Is it easily accessible?
There are three entrances to the show ground. The main entrance is the Palace Garden Gate Entrance where the coach will drop off/pickup. There is a 20-30 minute walk to the showground which includes crossing a footbridge. A mobility bus operates between the coach park and the showground each day dropping you/picking up at the Stud Gate Entrance.
Can I take my wheelchair/mobility scooter?
Yes you can as long as they are collapsible. Electronic mobility scooters are available for hire (£20) and wheelchairs (£10). The money goes to charity and can be hired from the Stud Gate entrance. Where the grounds are too soft, boards are used to ease access around the site (dependant on weather conditions).
Where can I eat and drink?
A wide range of catering facilities are provided for visitors from fine dining in the Allium Restaurant to self-service outlets at the Garden Walk Café or Long Water Deli’s and not forgetting the Palace Tea Rooms.
Can I take a picnic?
Yes. It’s a great alternative to eating in a restaurant and brings the whole family together. There are picnic/seating areas located alongside the Long Water. Fingers crossed you’ll be visiting on a dry day!
Can I take photographs?
Yes you can but photography should be for personal use only.
Can I bring the children with me?
Children are allowed to visit but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. There are lots to keep them entertained including funky gardens, fairies and face painting. Head to the Conceptual Gardens near the Thames Entrance as there are lots of interactive displays.
Anything else for the kids?
Look out for the RHS Children’s Trail, a guide to show features that children will enjoy. Just make sure you pack a pen/pencil, because they will feel the need to smugly tick off all they have seen.
