Normally the Oberammergau Passion Play is performed every 10 years in the Bavarian town of the same name, however, due to the global pandemic this was not the case. Oberammergau Passion Play 2020, the 42nd version of the world- renowned production took place in 2022. The next Passion Play is due to take place in 2030.
In 1633 the people of Oberammergau pledged to act out the Passion Play, every decade, if no further villagers were to die of the plague. Their prayers were answered and in 1634 the first play took place.
About the Passion Play
The play covers the themes of life and death and follows the story of Christ from his entry into Jerusalem through his trial, crucifixion, resurrection and Ascension.
The Passion Play is divided into twelve scenes. The first part contains 6 scenes and begins in the afternoon . There is then a three-hour break, and final 6 scenes follow in the evening.
Everyone involved must be a citizen of Oberammergau to keep their promise of they made in 1633. This means only people have been born and raised in the village or have lived there for at least 20 years can take part. There are around 2000 citizens of the town who are involved in the production of the play, as singers, actors, musicians and technical support. There are 124 speaking roles, a 65-member orchestra and a 48 person chorus.
The beautiful village of Oberammergau is located roughly 60 miles from Munich and is surrounded by mountains and meadows.
