It was in 1863 that Vianden's celebrity fan Victor Hugo vowed to put the town in the limelight. While living here, Vianden's most famous resident accomplished a few things, namely penning part of a poem, putting out a raging fire and having his first tooth extracted. Since then, his hopes for tourism couldn't have been more successful. Nestled into the picturesque landscape in the Ardennes, Vianden is now one of the most popular destinations in Luxembourg with past visitors including Queen Elizabeth II. There are also a handful of attractions and 150km of walking paths for visitors to enjoy on a touring holiday.
Tour Vianden
The town's landmark centrepiece is the compelling Vianden Castle that has served as both fortress and palace. Built between the 11th and 14th century atop an old Roman fort, the castle was home to the counts of Vianden who had strong connections with French Royalty and the imperial court of Germany. Visitors may take a guided tour around the fairytale castle to appreciate its magnificent halls and military artefacts. Victor Hugo's house is another coach tour highlight: The house features the poet's personal correspondence and sketches and is where he wrote part of 'Annee Terrible'.
- Take time on your coach trip to Vianden to explore the city's narrow streets and gothic churches. The scenic German-Luxembourg National Park is also within easy reach.
