As Germany's oldest city once known as the 'Second Rome', Trier already had an admirable population by 100 AD and has visible Roman influences everywhere. Among the highlights of these imposing monuments and ruins are an excellently preserved amphitheatre, Roman baths, the lofty Constantine Basilica and the impressive Black Gate, a super structure that was part of the city walls.
Beautiful Trier has an attractive, pedestrianised town centre, was the birthplace of Karl Marx and is wonderfully situated at the start of the Moselle Valley wine route. As you might expect from somewhere of Roman descent, it also possesses a pretty lively nightlife.
- For some brilliant views of the city and for some memorable photos, climb to the top of the Black Gate and gaze out over Trier.
