Clinging for dear life to the limestone cliffs on which it is built, the medieval town of Rocamadour has a somewhat unique location above the gorge of the River Alzou. Famous for being the town where the body of St. Amadour (the Bible's Zacchaeus) was found near the Chapel in 1166, the town is now a major pilgrimage destination that puts it in the same league as Rome and Jerusalem.
Tour Rocamadour
The town is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and visitors on a coach holiday here are able to climb the 'Great Ladder' (flights of steps) to the Religious City at the town's top, which boasts no less than seven chapels. Asides from Rocamadour's sacred associations it is also a must on a touring holiday for its superb views over Dordogne and its truly splendid position.
- Don't miss this delightfully picturesque town at night; it is beautifully illuminated and is a sight in itself!
