2016 heralds the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. His landscape gardening changed the face of eighteenth century England as he designed country estates and mansions, moved hills and transformed flowing lakes and serpentine rivers into a magical world of green. His work has influenced many at home and abroad; both amateur gardeners and landscape designers are still inspired by his unique creations. Our special Anniversary Tour gives you the opportunity to discover for yourself the innovative gardens of Longleat House, Bowood and Blenheim Palace.

Longleat House & Garden

Longleat House is set in 900 acres of ‘Capability’ Brown designed landscape. The gardens and areas of the parkland were redesigned and modernised by ‘Capability’ Brown after 1757 where it was replaced with a fine lawn, a serpentine river, wooded hills and gravel paths meandering round a shrubbert. Our tour gives you plenty of time to explore Longleat House, widely regarded as one of the best examples of high Elizabethan architecture in Britain and one of the most beautiful stately homes open to the public. You’ll also enjoy a guided tour of the Formal Gardens, Secret Garden and Pleasure Walk before enjoying a Cream Tea in the Orangery.

Blenheim Palace Park & Gardens

Blenheim Palace was one of ‘Capability’ Brown’s finest examples of work. Commissioned by the 4th Duke of Marlborough in 1763 he transformed Blenheim Palace’s landscaped Parkland which, although appearing quite natural, is ‘contrived to pleasing effect’. Spend some time strolling around and admiring the Formal Gardens and ‘Capability’ Brown landscape. Maybe take a Buggy Tour or one of the suggested walks. Later, catch the Miniature Train to the Pleasure Gardens and spend time in the giant Marlborough Hedge Maze, Butterfly House, ‘Blenheim Bygones’ Exhibition and the Lavender Garden.

Bowood House & Cadbury Garden Centre

Bowood’s magnificent stately home stands within one of ‘Capability’ Brown’s most beautiful parks, with gently sloping lawns stretching down to the lake and distant views to the chalk downlands. Delights within the park include the Cascade, Doric Temple and Terrace Gardens. The Bowood Gardens are one of the special glories of Bowood, encompassing almost every period of English garden design from the early Georgian period onwards. Also included is entrance to Bowood House. Later visit Cadbury Garden Centre, one of the largest in the country and the perfect place to begin turning your inspiration into reality.
