Overlooked by a delightful twelfth century fairytale castle, the lovely, medieval town of Thun sits on the banks of the River Aare with the Swiss Alps piecing together a perfect backdrop. The castle isn't the only thing to overlook the town however; Thun is often glanced over by those on their way to Interlaken, and wrongly so. Lovely walks map the river's banks and the town's inviting back streets unveil shops and cafes.
Thun's main street Obere Hauptgasse offers quaint routes to the castle through cobbled side streets, whilst Schadau Park boasts well-kept flowerbeds. A round building in close proximity of the park houses the rather quirky Wochner Panorama, an enormous painting mounted around the inner wall and showing life in Thun in the 1800s. Thun also offers numerous boat trips including a beautifully restored paddle steamer that cruises serenely round the lake.
- Have a snoop around Thun Castle, containing a museum with exhibits spanning over five floors and over 4000 years.
