Bordering Poland and Slovakia in the South, the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains are an Alpine world of timber chalets, sweeping, glassy mountain lakes and hugely rewarding scenery. The Poles have been holidaying here for years but the Tatras are barely on the radar for non-natives, despite the fact that they are the ideal way of seeing the undiscovered Poland on a touring holiday.
The popular Tatras destination is Zakopane, a premier mountain town dubbed Poland's 'winter capital'. At this time of year the resort's ski jumps and cross-country runs buzz with winter sports enthusiasts while summer in the Tatras offers coach tourists strolls against stunning backdrops and more daring hikes up to Rysy, the highest Polish peak.
