As the ancient setting for Scotland's great battles of independence from William Wallace's victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge to the legendary Battle of Bannockburn, Stirling is the heritage heart of Scotland. Recently added to Scotland's list of cities in 2002, it is a timeless city radiating grace and splendour, where the streets of the old town wind up towards the cliff-top castle, elevated 250 feet on castle rock.
Tour Stirling
Since so much Scottish history is embedded in Stirling it would be a shame to miss it on your Scottish holiday. Take a tour of the castle and enjoy sweeping views over seven battlegrounds or marvel at the gleaming, restored Chapel Royal where Mary, Queen of Scots was crowned at the very young age of nine weeks old in 1543. For further awe-inspiring panoramas as far as Loch Lomond, the National Wallace Monument that rises up from the middle of the Stirling countryside also beckons. On display here is the Scottish hero's battle sword as well as a hall of heroes dedicated to the country's great figures (Sean Connery and Sir Alexander Fleming included).
- On your coach tour, don't miss a trip to the nearby Bannockburn Heritage Centre, which lives out scenes of Scotland's exciting history from the crowning of victor Robert the Bruce to a huge, sword-wielding figure hero William Wallace.
