Known for centuries as the city of pirates, this virtually impregnable fortified port remains an imposing sight from outside its grey, granite walls. Inside, a maze of charming, narrow streets are a joy to discover and are home to hospitable bars and cafes with a seafaring theme, good quality shops and boutiques, and some excellent seafood restaurants. Blow the cobwebs away with a stroll along the sandy beach.
