It may sound like a cliche but with its rolling hills, cracked-like mountains and sheer stunning, rugged landscape, County Sligo really does rank among the prettiest destinations to visit for holidays in Ireland. Known famously as having links with celebrated poet W.B. Yeats, it is quite possible that his Nobel Prize winning literature might have been inspired by Sligo's beautiful landscape.
Sligo town itself is the largest town of northwest Ireland and is packed with shops and pubs yet all the while retaining a rural feel. The natives are friendly too and the town emits a delightfully laid-back ambience. It is a great place for shopping or simply wandering the streets, while a twenty-minute walk out of town can bring you face to face with beaches or wild countryside. Sligo is also the site of the marvellously preserved Sligo Abbey, containing a wealth of carvings, cloisters and the only sculptured 15th century high altar to survive in any Irish monastic church.
