As one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico's capital, San
Juan is the landing place of many who choose the island as a holiday
destination. Combining 500 years of Spanish heritage, colonial history and a
blend of old and new worlds, visitors are just as likely to come across clubs
and casinos as they are culture, and high-rise hotels as they are history.
Tour San Juan
The city's trio of forts are a major nod to the island's stronghold past and
make for interesting viewing on a coach tour of the city. Sixteenth century
El Morro is the best known of these and was deemed a World
Heritage Site in 1949, allowing visitors to stroll around the dramatic ramparts
and enjoy the outstanding views over San Juan Bay. If appreciating forts is your
forte, San Cristobal (which is also a World Heritage Site), and
San Jeronimo are not far off. Old San Juan's cobbled streets
showcase some 400 Spanish colonial buildings built between the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries, while for those simply interested in lazing on a towel,
San Juan dishes up a number of fine, white sandy beaches.
- For the very best in late night casinos and clubs head to San Juan's hotels.
Be prepared to dress up for the occasion as casinos here are upscale and smart
attire is essential!
- The Museo de las Americas is situated in an old Spanish
troop barracks and displays folk art, fine painting and sculptures,
archaeological items and a native collection of Santos that are well
worth seeing on an escorted tour.
