For most, Salisbury in the county of Wiltshire is a handy springboard to Stonehenge, although this ancient city with its 13th century cathedral is definitely worth more than just a passing glance. Showcasing the tallest spire in England at 404ft, Constable captured the cathedral in some of his major landscapes and Salisbury's beautiful nearby countryside also inspired the writings of Thomas Hardy.
Along with a peppering of historic buildings, high street shops and no less than five rivers, one of which is the River Avon, Salisbury offers a pleasing mix of tearooms and a large number of pubs in which to spend a relaxing afternoon. Visit the world-class Salisbury Cathedral to see stunning interior vaulting, detailed stained glass, friezes and effigies. There is also an original copy of the Magna Carta in the Chapter House, which is not to be missed on your coach trip!
- Since Salisbury is only a pebble's throw away from Stongehenge, don't even think about heading home without visiting this strange prehistoric monument. An amazing 4000 years old, for centuries Stonehenge has attracted writers, painters and every sort of visitor but its purpose still remains a mystery.
