Portsmouth is the southeast's undisputed capital of all things maritime, flaunting Henry VIII'S beloved Mary Rose, Nelson's infamous HMS Victory, the HMS Warrior and The Royal Navy Museum. This also makes it a firm favourite with history lovers as well as Dickens fans, who may step inside his birthplace and even behold the mournful couch upon which he died.
Asides from centuries of history and a strong naval lovers' following, Portsmouth also offers the recent Spinnaker Tower, an amazing 170-meter high modern structure that looks like it's been relocated from Dubai. Climb the tower by an internal high-speed or external glass lift to afford views of the Isle of Wight, or marvel at the surrounding views of Portsmouth. What most people don't know about Portsmouth is that it is the UK's only island city; it also has three distinct shopping areas in which to flex your credit cards.
- Since so many of Portsmouth's assets are linked to the sea, it makes sense to enjoy its waterfront during your escorted coach tour. Head here to breathe in some fresh air or enjoy a meal in one of the restaurants.
