Situated at the mouth of the River Douro, Porto comes in second as Portugal's largest city. Like Lisbon, colourful tiled facades are out in force and there are more churches than you can shake a stick at. The Cathedral near the main square is the biggest of Porto's religious offerings and overlooks the Douro, while the gilded insides of the beautiful Igreja da Santa Clara church is definitely worth an afternoon.
Take pleasure in strolling around Porto's riverside quarter Ribeiro and onto the Central e Baixa quarter, where winding streets widen into broad avenues lined with eateries. The Cordoaria quarter offers appealing shops and some not-so-appealing steep inclines.
- Make an effort to visit the wine caves of Vila Nova de Gaia. It's worth it just to sample the Port!
- See Porto from the river and cruise down the Douro in a riverboat.
